Annotation’s role in more transparent and conversational journalism

News Co/Lab Co-founder Dan Gillmor will discuss how journalists and journalism educators can use annotation to increase transparency at the I Annotate 2019 conference May 23.

Gillmor’s presentation, “Annotation for More Transparent and Conversational Journalism,” calls for upgrades to both information providers and consumers — the supply and demand side of news.

“Journalists should help their communities better understand how news works, and they can do this by being much more transparent — showing how and why they do what they do — and by engaging via deep conversations and collaboration with people and institutions in their communities,” Gillmor says in the I Annotate 2019 program. “Annotation is one of the many ways they can accomplish this.”

This year’s conference — Annotation Unleashed: The Web at 30 — will highlight web annotation’s growing standards, tech and community. The conference will take place at the American Geophysical Union in Washington D.C., May 22 and 23.
